2013 season moves into top gear for Elfyn Evans

The Fiesta R5 was recently launched to the motorsport media at M-Sport’s Dovenby Hall headquarters and Elfyn was on hand to act as chauffeur and driving coach to the lucky journalists who got to sample the new car and the Fiesta R200. It was then straight on to the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power in Cheshire for a series of demonstration runs in the R5 in front of an appreciative audience.

Immediately after the R5 launch, however, Elfyn was asked to deputise for Nasser Al-Attiyah on the forthcoming round of the World Rally Championship, the Rally Italia Sardegna. Due to commitments in Qatar, Nasser was forced to pull out of the event and generously offered his seat to Elfyn, who will be partnered by Nasser’s co-driver Giovanni Bernacchini. The pair won’t be eligible to score points for the Qatar World Rally Team, but Elfyn will be able to score WRC driver points, while the event will be Elfyn’s debut in a World Rally Car.

Elfyn’s focus for the year, however, is the WRC2 Championship and that campaign begins in earnest in early August, when Elfyn and his co-driver Dan Barritt will contest the Neste Oil Rally Finland. The pair will tackle the event in the Fiesta R5, giving the car its first appearance on a WRC round, before an intensive programme of rallies in the car during the second half of the season.

Elfyn said:

This is another fantastic opportunity for me and I want to say a huge thank you to Nasser and Malcolm Wilson for considering me for the drive. This will be my first time in Sardinia, my first time in a WRC car and my first time with Giovanni, but with the team behind me and Giovanni’s extensive experience, I know I will be in capable hands.

My aim for the event is just to enjoy it and to gain further experience. I’m learning all the time and if I can make it through all of the stages I’ll be happy. The most important thing at the moment is to get as much competitive seat time as possible and that will be my main goal next weekend.

Team Principal, Malcolm Wilson OBE, said:

Elfyn thoroughly deserves this opportunity. He is learning fast and, as he works towards more rounds during the latter half of the season, the added competition - this time behind the wheel of the Ford Fiesta WRC - will be extremely valuable.
