Disappointment Down Under for Elfyn
Elfyn, the 2012 FIA WRC Academy winner, had been invited to compete on the event by RSPORT Motorsport, the Australian importer of the Ford Fiesta R2 rally car. Running as part of the two-car Innate Motorsport team, Elfyn had hoped to reward the team with a good result, but it wasn’t to be. Heavy rain forced the organisers to cancel two of the first day’s six planned stages; the fact that Elfyn was making his debut on a non-European rally meant the unpredictable road surface was then an even more tricky test for the young Welshman.
I’m disappointed for myself and the whole team – they worked really hard at it. We were having a really good run; we just slid a little bit wide on a left-hander which had some adverse camber on it. That was enough to drag us into a ditch where there was a big stone and that ripped the wheel off.
It’s all the more frustrating because we did our own thing on stage 1 and the pace we were on felt comfortable. To be second after that stage, only seven seconds down on the leader, shows what a complete package the R2 Fiesta is.
The Australian roads were very enjoyable. The recce was very wet and so quite challenging, but the roads had dried out before the rally started and I really enjoyed the short run I had.
