Evans tames the tarmac on Jim Clark Rally

Held on the closed public roads of Berwickshire, the Jim Clark stages have a fearsome reputation with some of the fastest and most challenging asphalt roads in the British Rally Championship (BRC). Littered with huge jumps, ditches and hedges to catch out the unwary, the Jim Clark Rally presented the Ford Fiesta crews with a real test. But rising to the challenge, the competitors set some blistering times to challenge even some of the more powerful specification R3 cars.

The rally got underway with two runs through the streets of Duns on Friday night. Getting to grips with the art of asphalt rallying, Finnish gravel expert Jussi Kumpumäki set the early pace behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta R2, with Alex Parpottas going fastest on stage 2 to assume the overnight lead, 2.2 seconds up on Kumpumäki with Evans third, 2.5 seconds ahead of Matthew Cathcart.

When the rally re-started with four stages on Saturday morning, Evans came alive with a clean sweep of stage victories to lead the series after the opening loop. With standing water and treacherous mud making the infamous stages a challenge for even the most experienced drivers, Evans’ composure and ability to read the conditions shone through as he led by over 50 seconds going into the midday service.

Embarking on the second loop of stages, Evans had a trouble free run; taking three out of a possible four stage victories to lead the series by just over one and a half minutes and secure fifth place in the rally overnight.

Contesting five stages over Sunday’s final day, Evans consolidated his lead to claim his fourth consecutive victory in the FST as well as a strong fourth place in the BRC. Having to contend with changeable weather, the Welshman thrived in the difficult conditions; making the right tyre choices to secure another three stage victories and maintain his lead at the head of both the FST and the BRC.

We are very happy with the result. I lost a bit of time on the Super Special Stages on Friday night with the wrong tyres, but I had a good day on Saturday. Today `{`Sunday`}` was difficult in the morning. We went out on dry tyres and there was quite a bit of rain. Things went better in the afternoon where we had the right tyre combination. It has also been Dale's `{`Furniss`}` first time co-driving for me and he has done a fantastic job. I am really pleased.
