Hard work pays off for rally driver
The 22 year old received the title after being selected by a panel of expert judges at the Pirelli Star shootout. The prize, an ultimate dream for any young rally driver, includes a TEG Sport Impreza to drive in the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championships next year.
Competing against seven other finalists, Elfyn was assessed on his pace-note making and media skills as well as the critical driving element. All contestants drove a TEG Sport run Suburu Impreza and Renault Sport-supplied Twingo R2 over two separate stages.
Martin Pallot, Pirelli UK Motorsport Manager, said: “The quality of finalists was excellent this year. Having qualified, each finalist displayed real talent and should be proud of their performances. However, only one driver can take the prize and Elfyn certainly impressed us all. We look forward to working with Elfyn next year.”
Keeping his eye on the future, Elfyn is already focusing on the start of the next competition. He comments on his recent success: “Winning this prize will allow me to take the next step in my career, one that would have otherwise been difficult. To progress further, I must start competing outside of the UK and to do this I would need to secure some kind of funding or support.”
The judging panel at the event included Pirelli UK Motorsport Manager, Martin Pallot, former World Rally Champion co-driver, Phil Mills, former Suzuki Junior World Rally Team manager, Risto Laine and British Rally Championship Manager, Mark Taylor. Elfyn has had more than one success to celebrate of late, after he received three awards at the Dulux Trade British Rally Championship annual awards. Elfyn formerly received his Pirelli Star Driver award at the ceremony and was also awarded for Outstanding Performance in the championship.
He took the accolade as his clean sweep of seven rounds in the Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy. Elfyn, along with his co-driver Andrew Edwards, also received the British Junior Rally Championship award.
Elfyn has a calendar of event lined up for next year, with the first being Rally Sunseeker International Bournemouth, Poole in February.
