Testing time is just reward for winning Fiesta SportTrophy
Elfyn, who competes in an R2-specification Ford Fiesta, was given the opportunity to see one of the team’s Fiesta RS WRC cars at close hand and was able to observe the engineers and mechanics in action as they worked through the day’s test programme. Jari-Matti Latvala, fresh from finishing second overall on the all-asphalt ADAC Rallye Deutschland, was using the day to decide on his set-up for the muddy gravel stages of Wales and Elfyn’s high-speed passenger ride through the test stage was a chance for the young Welsh driver to observe the Finn at work.
I have to say that I’m normally the world’s worst passenger but I took a lot away from my run with Jari-Matti. The car’s acceleration and braking ability are obviously in a different league to what I’m used to, but I concentrated on watching Jari-Matti closely and I also picked up a lot from talking to him during the day.
The day has really made me understand what goes on at that level a lot more clearly. It’s also a great motivator for anyone who is considering competing in the WRC and it showed the kind of work that goes into preparing for an event like Wales Rally GB.
Above all, the whole day was really enjoyable. You don’t often get a chance to be a part of something like that and so I’d like to thank the team and especially Jari-Matti for making me so welcome.
