WRC2 campaign gets going for Elfyn
Following Elfyn’s sensational debut in a Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team Ford Fiesta in Sardinia, the young Welshman has been busy preparing for his campaign in the WRC2 category. Recording the best-ever debut finish in a ‘full’ WRC car by a Junior WRC title winner – sixth overall in Sardinia – has given Elfyn’s confidence a huge boost, while back-to-back outings on the Nicky Grist Stages Rally and the Greystoke Stages Rally in the UK have improved his knowledge of the R5 car still further.
Elfyn and Dan made their maiden appearance in the WRC2 category back in April, when they competed on the Rally of Portugal in a Ford Fiesta RRC. To make final preparations for their return to the series – on an event that saw Elfyn take victory in the WRC Academy in 2012 – the British pair recently headed to Estonia for a test programme under the watchful eye of 2003 Rally Finland winner Markko Märtin.
So far, the car feels fantastic. It’s been a bit of a break since Portugal, but I can’t wait to get back competing in WRC2 with the new car. Again, it won’t be an easy event; there will be a lot of quick Scandinavians looking for the win, but we’ll try our best and see what happens. This is an event I really enjoy and we won here last year (as part of the WRC Academy) so hopefully we won’t be too far away.
It’s a very fast event – the fastest of the year, in fact – and you need to have total confidence in yourself, your co-driver and your car. To prepare, we have been testing on similar roads in Estonia with Markko Märtin and the MM-Motorsport team. Markko in particular was very helpful. He knows what it takes to win in Finland, so it was a great opportunity for me to get some advice from someone like him.
