Finland victory puts Elfyn in World Rally Championship title hunt

Dominant performance from Welsh star narrows the gap at top of table.

Elfyn got his 2023 WRC championship challenge well and truly back on track when victory at Rally Finland saw him take a maximum points haul from the iconic event.

Winning the event for the second time in less than three years, he joined an exclusive club of non-Finnish drivers to master the high-speed challenge and, in doing so, sealed a popular victory for Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team on their home roads around Jyvaskyla in central Finland.

Elfyn’s challenge began from the opening day, sitting just a few seconds behind team-mate and rally leader Kalle Rovanpera, before the Finn crashed out on stage 7, leaving Evans with a 6.9 second overnight lead. He then went on to dominate Saturday’s action, taking stage wins on seven out of eight stages and extendi

ng his lead to over 32 seconds going into the final day.

He continued to blitz the chasing pack and even went fastest on the final Power Stage to clinch an additional five points.

His victory was overseen by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda and saw Elfyn close the gap at the top of the championship to 35 points.
