Elfyn extends WRC lead in Estonia

Battling display despite road position sees Welshman pull away at the top

Elfyn extended his advantage at the top of the FIA World Rally Championship to 25 points after an impressive performance and a solid result of sixth place at the high-speed Rally Estonia.

Be battled road position challenges all weekend to set times that help secure a strong pace and allowed him to challenge for additional Sunday points. 

As championship leader, Elfyn faced a tough start to the rally running first on the road during Friday in particularly dry and loose conditions and sweeping a cleaner line for his rivals to follow. He had a good feeling with his GR Yaris but wasn’t able to challenge the drivers running further back and finished the opening day in ninth.

Elfyn and co-driver Scott Martin used a slightly better position on Saturday to move up from ninth to sixth after the first two stages of the long day. But low grip stages in the afternoon meant they weren’t able to capitalise further.

Staring sixth on the road for Sunday’s final two stages did allow Elfyn to challenge in the race for the additional points. Thanks to two competitive, flat-out runs, he finished second on Super Sunday and third in the Power Stage to collect crucial points and increase his championship lead to 25 points.

The high-speed action continues in just two weeks’ time as the series moves to the iconic stage of Rally Finland from 30 July to 2 August.
