Strong drive in Poland moves Welsh closer in WRC title race.
Elfyn once again closed the gap to the lead of the FIA World Rally Championship after finishing second on Rally Poland – helping his Toyota Gazoo Racing team secure a fantastic 1-2 result on the tough event.
With a strong performance all weekend, he was firmly in the fight for the win for much of the event, but two tyre related issues dropped him vital seconds which ultimately put paid to his fight for victory.
Elfyn was on the pace from the opening stage, despite running second on the road for most of the day, and put in a string of solid times during Friday. He pushed hard on the high-speed Polish stages and ended Friday morning’s loop in third place. A strong afternoon helped him consolidate that position and he finished the day just two seconds adrift of the leader.
Saturday also started well as Elfyn closed to within 0.1 seconds of the lead before suffering a tyre delamination on the first stage of the afternoon that saw him drop to third. He reclaimed second on Sunday morning as he pushed for a strong finish but a tyre deflation on the final Power Stage left him seventh quickest and he lost out on the opportunity to secure additional championship points.
However, he still outscored both championship rivals and reduced the gap to the leader of the drivers’ championship to 15 points.
The high-speed gravel events continue with Rally Latvia on 18-21 July.
